SC lifts ban on import of needle coke, HEG and Graphite India to benefit

As per Bloomberg Quint, import of needle coke for usage in manufacturing of graphite electrodes (GE) will be allowed.

Usage of petcoke had come under scrutiny due to rising pollution levels in major cities, and therefore a ban was imposed on the import of same on August 2018 for its usage as a fuel. However, import of petcoke was allowed for only cement, lime kiln, calcium carbide and gasification industries for use as a feedstock.

As per reports, Graphite India and HEG had made an appeal seeking permission to import pet coke as it is used as a feedstock for GE rather than as a fuel.

It is a positive development for both HEG and Graphite India as needle coke is an important raw material for GE. Moreover, there is no production facility in India for manufacturing of the same. Hence, an import ban would have affected HEG and Graphite India sales.
